Muirrean's Story

When Muirrean's grandfather chose MAID (medical assistance in dying), she came to us for support.

Finding community gave Muirrean a place to share her story and turn something difficult into the reason others feel less isolated.

Speaking up about her story has been a big part of her healing journey.

“If we all talked about grief we’d live in a society where pain isn’t something to hide, and healing isn’t something you do alone.”

-Muirrean, 19

Muirrean's Story

Muirrean is a bright student and track athlete, who was making plans to study neuroscience in university when her grandfather chose MAID (Medical Assistance in Dying), an option for those suffering with incurable conditions to voluntarily end life. "MAID grief was like nothing I've ever been through. It was so confusing because I felt bad for feeling happy that someone had a choice over how they died." That's when Muirrean began joining our youth events. Being with peers that were also grieving gave her a place where it was safe to share what she was going through. She went from feeling understood to finding her voice: acting as a speaker at events and sharing her story on our podcast. She was also supported by our monthly donors. Their continual help fuels the platforms youth can use to speak up, like our podcast and special events. For Muirrean, speaking up was about making the kind of world she wanted to live in: "If we all talked about grief we’d live in a society where pain isn’t something to hide, and healing isn’t something you do alone." Muirrean recently made the transition to university, where she joined the track team and is following her academic passions.
